April 2009 02:29 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments Tweethunter valleyShareThis weekend we again drove up to the hunter valley about two hours drive North of Sydney. We left at 7am and met the other guys up there just after 9am. This time we went a big group of us but only three of us were tasting wine. The others were taking photos. Kim and I have spent a fair amount of time in the Hunter Valley and have a lot of favourite wines in the area. This time we decided to try some new and smaller places that we hadn't been to before. The challenge is still to find a sub $20 bottle of wine that is really good. It is pretty hard...but not impossible. In total we went to 9 vineyards to taske their wines. Some of the favourites this time was Gartelmann (The Wilhelm Shiraz is a good buy) and Peterson Estate (Kim loooved the sparkling desert wine). For lunch we went to a restaurant called The Verandah. They have a tapas style menu. The food was ok but a bit on the pricey side (but most of the . My favourite place in Hunter is a place called Mojo...but they are only open for dinner. Bimbadgen really let us down this time. They have some really good wines there, but the customer service was appalingly bad! They did not provide any assistance and were very rude (not just limited to one person there). I wanted to buy a couple of their wines but ended up walking away because there was no-one there to help.

April 2009 08:17 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments Tweetethans birthdayShareThis weekend it was Ethans 8th Birthday and his parents had organised a Birthday party for all his friends. As the last couple of years Kim and I was asked if we could facepaint the kids (We are not really good at face painting but the kids really don't care). Most of the kids had some degree of autism so just getting them to stand still while we paint them is a challenge. The previous two years I was dressed up as a pirat but decided to do something something different this year. I wanted to come dressed as a monster (Ethan likes Monsters) but Kim though that I shouldn't scare the kids and that I should come as a joker instead. We bought a hat and some stripey tights...it looked really funny. One of the parent though I was a paid helper when we arrived and started issuing me orders regarding that I really should be watching the kids so that they wouldn't injure themselves in the jumping castle that they had hired...he must have found it really unprofessional when I brushed him off ignoring his orders (I have a strong belief that kids should be allowed to be kids and that we in this modern age is too cautious protecting them)...and he must have felt really silly when he realised that I was a member of the family. The rest of the day was spent playing games with the kids (They had good fun when I started spraying them with water with a water pistol...until I was told by the same parent that I should stop because the jumping castle was getting slippery). The 'Donkeys Tail' game was a bit of a non-event...all the kids cheated and placed the tail where you would expect the tail to be. All credit to the kids...at least they know where the tail goes on animals. After the party Kim wanted some alone time with me and we decided to go and watch a movie. There wasn't any good movies on that I wanted to watch so I let Kim decide...and we ended up watching a chick flick.

This was my christmas present from Kim ('give me experiences instead of objects').It was really good...I think I prefer the lightheartedness of musicals to Operas. Capitol Theatre is one of the great theatres in Sydney. In inside decor is old and glamourous. The Dancing and the singing in the show was really good. Poor guys...the Dolls seem to have the upper hand in this story. In one of the roles was Kenny...from a famous Australian movie 'Kenny'. I have no idea what his real name is.
15. March 2009 10:56 by Rene Pallesen 0 Comments Climbing at Blue Bell (The Shire) 15. March 2009 10:56 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments Tweetclimbing at blue bell the shireShareThis weekend Andy and I decided to explore a new climbing area in the Sydney Area (We are running out of places to climb within Sydney and sometime Sydney is too long a drive). This time we decided on a small area called Blue Bell in the Southern part of Sydney in the Heathcote National Park.Once we arrived we had to find the access to the cliffs. The carpark is almost on the top of the cliffs near houses, but the area doesn't get a lot of traffic so there is no good tracks. Eventually we found our way down with some a lot of bush bashing. We decided to start on a couple of easier climbs on the Mini Wall where there was some grade 16 climbs (and 10/11's). They were far from being grade 16. The first two climbs (Anika 16 and Nathan 16) were harder than what they were graded at. Both Andy and I were finding it hard and agreed that the climbing felt more like a 18 or 19...and we were both thinking "what the fu.. is wrong there!". We then looked at who had graded the climbs and it turned out to be the same person a Jason Lammers. We decided that this may be one very dangerous Wanker and decided to take other climbs that he'd graded with caution (Next day I found another website describing the climb as being a lot harder...this guy graded it as a 6a = 19).After this we moved to the main wall and did another climb at the same grade (Sparky 16) and this turned out to be really nice a cruisy and this would potentially be a good lear-to-lead climb for someone who is comfortable in the gym. After this we moved onto a bit harder climb (Heathcote 18) graded by the same idiot Jason Lammers. Someone who is only just comfortable at this grade would be in real trouble here. The top move is really delicate; in fact so delicate that Andy were totally unable to complete the move and bailed after a a number of attempts (and a lot of falls).I then tried the climb and eventually after a couple of falls managed to complete the move...and boy that is really balancy. You hand on to this slobing groove and then do a high stepup. you then balance your left hand up the wall until you reach a good hold up very high (as Andy put it: "A typical Rene move"). I would grade it as a 21 move...three grades harder that the wanker graded it.We had a look at the climb next to it (Screaming Cookatoos 18) and decided to do this on a top rope given that the top move looked dubious and that we hadn't had much luck with grades.Lucky that because the top move it really reachy and fairly thin. It would have taken a lot of commitment and knowing exactly where the only good hold is (which isn't great) to be able to complete it and then you still have to put a plate on the carrot bolt and clip it from this position before moving to the anchor. They really should have put a ring bolt here and they could have put the bolt a bit lover so it could be clipped from below protecting this move better.By the way this area is a weird mix of Ring bolts, fixed hangers, ringbolts, gear, chain anchors, ring bolt anchors and topouts....great job guys!!! Anyway we had a really good day but we didn't dare try any of the many 19, 20, 21's (which is my comfortable lead limit) in the area as most of them were graded by the same guy. Without including these climbs the area is too small to return to in the near future.

There were lots of nesting penguins and they are more agile than you think, jumping between the rocks on the beach (notice how the penguin below is airborne). They sit on their nests until the eggs hatch.and they stay with the young ones after they hatch too.And once in a while a seagull gets lucky and steals one of the eggs. There are hundreds of them on the beach. And they are right next to the path. The whole area was covered in smoke from a massive bush fire up in the hills, so our eyes were watering and hurting by the end of it. Despite the smoke I still managed to get a good photo of this beautiful flightless bird. 21. February 2017 20:02 by Rene Pallesen 0 Comments South Africa - Cafe Africa Cape town 21. The advantage of a guide is that they are in constant radio communications with all the other cars and therefore can track the animals. On this day it was very hot and a lot of the animals were hiding in the bush and it seemed that we spotted all the animals and called it in to the other cars.Having the private guide was a massive advantage as we could spend the time as we wanted, so we didn't spend much time on say elephants, but we did spend 45 minutes stalking a lion hoping it would get too hot under a bush and get out into the clear. The second day we went it was raining and a lot more challenging, but we still spotted some that we didn't see the first day.Camera wise I knew it would be a challenge to get good photos with a normal lens and didn't have the budget or justification to spend on a fast long lens. Instead all the photos in this post were taken with my 80-200 f2.8 with a 2x teleconverter. The US ship is an older class ship, and from the outside fairly unimpressive. but on closer inspection it had an impressive arsenal of missiles. As well as guns. The crew were very friendly and were happy to have their photo taken. The British vessel on the other hand is a very modern ship, again with a very impressive firepower. The crew again were happy to have their photos taken. After this Aiden was over the ships and when he spotted a firetruck he got very excited. Eventually he more or less gave up. His illness took to great a hold of him. These are some of the 'darkest' photos I have of him while he was struggling with his schizophrenia and were taken shortly before I moved to Australia. He lost contact with most of his friends and was very dependent on my mum and dad as well as other support programs in place.I prefer to remember him as he was before he passed away. This poem reminds me of him.The morning after I killed myself, I woke up. I made myself breakfast in bed. I added salt and pepper to my eggs and used my toast for a cheese and bacon sandwich. I squeezed a grapefruit into a juice glass. I scraped the ashes from the frying pan and rinsed the butter off the counter. I washed the dishes and folded the towels. The morning after I killed myself, I fell in love. Not with the boy down the street or the middle school principal. Not with the everyday jogger or the grocer who always left the avocados out of the bag. I fell in love with my mother and the way she sat on the floor of my room holding each rock from my collection in her palms until they grew dark with sweat. I fell in love with my father down at the river as he placed my note into a bottle and sent it into the current. With my brother who once believed in unicorns but who now sat in his desk at school trying desperately to believe I still existed. The morning after I killed myself, I walked the dog. I watched the way her tail twitched when a bird flew by or how her pace quickened at the sight of a cat. I saw the empty space in her eyes when she reached a stick and turned around to greet me so we could play catch but saw nothing but sky in my place. I stood by as strangers stroked her muzzle and she wilted beneath their touch like she did once for mine. The morning after I killed myself, I went back to the neighbors’ yard where I left my footprints in concrete as a two year old and examined how they were already fading. I picked a few daylilies and pulled a few weeds and watched the elderly woman through her window as she read the paper with the news of my death. I saw her husband spit tobacco into the kitchen sink and bring her her daily medication. The morning after I killed myself, I watched the sun come up. Each orange tree opened like a hand and the kid down the street pointed out a single red cloud to his mother. The morning after I killed myself, I went back to that body in the morgue and tried to talk some sense into her. I told her about the avocados and the stepping stones, the river and her parents. I told her about the sunsets and the dog and the beach. The morning after I killed myself, I tried to unkill myself, but couldn’t finish what I started. —Meggie Royer 28.

We quickly learned that the queue for people who had pre-purchased tickets was shorter and also moved faster than the other queue. I used my tripod as a monopod and the guide was great at moving the car into spots where I had a clear line of sight (another advantage of not having to consider other passengers). Here are the Big 5 we spotted.Leopard:Lion:Rhinos:Elephants:African Buffalos:And here are some of the others such as Zebras:Hyenas:Giraffes:Impalas:Kudu:Waterbucks:Wothhogs:Baboons:Monkeys:Guinea Fowl:African Fishing Eagles:Storks:Marabous:Turtles (These ones are predators):Weaver birds:Chameleons: Perfect Moments Photography | A Rene Pallesen Journal Blog Portfolio Packages Contact About Home 17. September 2015 18:09 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments TweetThis post is mostly about Claus when he was at his top as one of Denmarks top tennis players.I have ShareThis post is mostly about Claus when he was at his top as one of Denmarks top tennis players.I have kept scans of all the newspaper clippings from when he was winning a lot of tournaments. In the mid 90's he started to get pretty sick and although he still tried to play tennis it was never at the same level again. These were taken at a New Years even in Kenya and before my brother got really sick, so probably around 1989/90.And here is Claus. And my mum.I was really good at shooting when I was a kid and won lots of championships. This photo is one of the few things I have from that time. This is Claus and I with our dog.Not sure which ones of these is Claus and which is me.This was taken just christmas day in the back yard of my grandma's (Mormor) house. We got the skis as a christmas present. All the fields behind her house belonged to my mothers brother Flemming.I think this may be my brother. For the first time I've noticed the photo in the background. It looks like this may be a photo of my mum with her two sisters and brother and what could be her dad Raimer in the middle. This would most likely be the new years eve where we were trapped by the snow 1978/79. We were supposed to have celebrated with the family but couldn't even get out of the house. Delicious with a glass of milk and a pie.We didn't have a lawn in the back yard. Instead we had pebbles...lots of fun shoveling them. This I think is a christmas eve dinner at my grandmas (mormor) place. My mum on the left and my uncle Flemming in the middle. Not sure who the person standing up in. It could be my grandmas brother. Possibly from around 1976/77I think it is my great grandpa (Raimer) in the middle row number two from the left. October 2013 03:05 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments Tweetlucas 1yo centennial park photosShareThe other day we went to Centennial park to take some 1yo photos of Lucas using a balloon. What we had in mind was to take the photo down a row of trees....but it was impossible to get both the balloon and Lucas to behave in the same photo and the light wasn't great anyway with patches of sun and shade in the middle of the day.We instead tried to be creative with other photos.

30. September 2015 18:09 by Rene Pallesen 0 Comments Claus as a tennis player 30. —Meggie Royer
28. September 2015 15:09 by Rene Pallesen 0 Comments More childhood memories 28. September 2015 15:09 by Rene Pallesen | 0 Comments TweetHere are some more photos from my childhood in no particular order. The first ones from a New Years ShareHere are some more photos from my childhood in no particular order. The first ones from a New Years eve where we got a bit silly with the hats. The title of the photo says that it is Christoffer (??) in the top left corner. Looking at the age of the boys this would have been taken in the 1920's.Claus dancing aeound the christmas tree and my mum and grandma (Bedstemor/Farmor).From left to Right. My grandma (On my dads side/Bedstemor/farmor), Knud Aage (My uncle/dads brother), My mum (in the foreground), My grandad (in the background), Irene (my auntie/dads sister), Grete and I assume the baby is Vinnie which means that it is likely that my mum was pregnant with Claus (born in July). This was taken at my grandparents place and after my brother got sick. He was really suffering at this point. This is one of the happiest family photos I have and the only one I have a print of.Going for a walk at Marielyst with Lott and Willy some of our german friends. Claus in the foreground and my dad on the right. I think you can just spot me in yellow pants in the background.I think this is at Lotte and Willy's summer house. Not sure if this is Claus or myself being babtised. It is my grand mother being god mother. This was taken outside our summer house in Marielyst. My brother number 2 from the top right on his school photo.Claus at daycare number 4 from the top left.Me at day care top left.
